It's calculated from factors like shot location, angle, distance, assist type, and defensive pressure. Each shot gets a value from 0 to 1; a team's total xG is the sum of all its shots. A penalty is usually worth ~0.79–0.80. Higher xG = better chances, regardless of whether goals were actually scored.
